At least 31 people were killed and dozens more injured when a voter registration center in Kabul, Afghanistan was hit by a suicide bombing on Sunday.
According to Wahid Majro, a spokesman for the country’s health ministry, 54 people were treated for non-fatal injuries in the attack.
The fundamentalist Sunni Muslim ISIS terror group has claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement issued via the Amaq media outlet, saying that it had targeted members of the country’s Shi’ite minority.
Kabul police chief Daud Amin said that the bombing targeted voters waiting in line to receive ID cards ahead of this year’s national elections, slated for October, AP reported.
The massive explosion shattered windows in buildings miles away from the attack, local media outlets reported, and led to road closures around the scene of the blast.
In addition to the Kabul attack, five others were killed in Afghanistan in a roadside bombing in the Baghlan province, with an additional four victims injured in the explosion.
