A high school student who opened fire at school Tuesday is dead and two other students have been hospitalized after a shooting at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County in Maryland, according to the sheriff's office, reported KLFY Channel 10 News.

A male student fired at a 16-year-old female student in a hallway around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said. A 14-year-old male student was also hit during the shooting.

During the shooting, an armed school resource officer reacted and exchanged shots with the shooter, Sheriff Cameron added. The resource officer was not injured.

One of the two victims is reportedly in critical condition.
