Avner Shimoni, Gaza Coast (Gush Katif) Regional Coast head, says that the total number of mortar shells that have fallen on Jewish communities in Gush Katif and Gaza now reaches \"the astonishing level of 1,200 - and it happens almost every single night.\" Miraculously, bodily injuries have been very few, he says, \"but some people have been wounded, and these attacks take their toll in psychological damage as well. All my efforts to get the army to go in and totally destroy the terror nests once and for all are in vain, as the army and government seem to be happy with a situation of \'pretend quiet\' and don\'t want to react as long as the damage is local and minor…\"

Regarding the Cabinet decision to allow another 6,000 Thai workers to work in Israel, Shimoni expressed satisfaction:

\"Our allocation is only 800 foreign workers, even though we are a major supplier of lettuce [especially the bug-free variety - ed. note], other leafy vegetables, and many others - these 800 workers are not enough, and we unfortunately have to rely on Arab workers; just two weeks ago, our friend Nissan Dolinger was murdered by one of them… We need an additional 800 foreign workers to allow us to harvest our crops in safety.\"

In answer to a question, he said that it \"very much bothers us to have foreign workers, but what can we do when our friends and neighbors don\'t want to do this type of work, and the unemployed to whom we turn from nearby towns don’t want to come to Gush Katif?\"
