An agreement has been signed recently between the Israel Defense Forces and the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems company for the acquisition of thousands of light-weight shoulder-fired rocket launchers for the Israeli army’s infantry units.
The purchase will increase the size of the IDF’s arsenal of MATADOR (Man-portable Anti-Tank, Anti-DOoR) rocket launchers.
The new AS60 MATADOR launchers were specially adapted for the needs of the IDF after a process of development and operational characterization over the last two years, in order to reduce the weight of the launcher by about 40%, which will allow for operating flexibility during maneuvers.
Originally designed in 1999, the original MATADOR systems were used by Israeli forces during combat with the Hamas terror organization in 2008-2009.
Intended for use against both armored vehicles and fortified enemy positions, the MATADOR rocket systems are specially designed for use in close-combat – including in urban combat situations.
