The Islamic Republic of Iran has experienced in recent days a wave of demonstrations not seen in the country since 2009, when the masses took to the streets on grounds that the election results claimed by Ahmadinejad were forged.

The first two days of protests were relatively quiet, but on Saturday two protesters were shot dead by the Revolutionary Guards during a demonstration in the western city of Dorud.

In a video posted on the social networks, the two appear to be lying lifelessly on the ground.

Demonstrations in Iran's capital Tehran also degenerated into violent confrontation yesterday after police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators at Tehran University.

Iran's official Fars news agency claimed demonstrators threw stones at policemen. Conservative students supporting the government came to the scene and chanted "Death to the inciters."

US President Donald Trump responded last night to events in Iran for the first time, saying in a tweet that "Oppressive regimes cannot endure forever."

"The day will come when the Iranian people will face a choice," Trump added, quoting from a speech on the subject, signing with warning to the Iranian regime, "The world is watching!"

Later that day, Vice President Mike Pence also related to Iran, saying: "The time has come for the regime in Tehran to end terrorist activities, corruption, & their disregard for human rights."

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "The days of America looking the other way ... are over."
