The complaints commissioner of the Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has voiced harsh criticism of the editorial policy at its Voice of Israel radio station and Channel One TV station. Ombudsman Amos Goren said in his annual report this week that the IBA suffers from the \"suffocating hegemony\" of individuals from a very particular social milieu from central Israel. The situation is perpetuated, Goren wrote, by the fact that IBA employees recruit new colleagues from among their friends or friends\' children. The report recommends \"affirmative action hiring\" to ensure that all sectors of society are well represented among the IBA announcers and commentators.
Goren also criticized the use of the term \"West Bank,\" saying that \"Judea and Samaria\" is the more accurate term and should be used in public media. He noted with surprise the use of the term \"extreme right wing\" in news broadcasts, and asked why he never hears about the \"extreme left wing.\"
