MK Rabbi Benny Elon was elected as leader of the Moledet party by a large majority yesterday. Almost 2/3 of the electorate voted for him, while Palmach Ze\'evi received only 36%. Ze\'evi, son of the assassinated party founder Rehavam (Gandhi) Ze\'evi, announced his resignation from the party late this morning. Elon said that he hopes that his election will signal a new trend towards more popular involvement in the party, \"as this is the only way for us to raise a new generation of leaders.\" Moledet leaders are buoyed by polls showing greatly increased support for the party. Elon quoted a finding yesterday that as much as 21% of the population would want to vote for a \"right-wing party that endorses transfer [of the Arab population out of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza].\"
