A female IDF soldier clashed with haredi demonstrators at an anti-draft rally in Jerusalem Monday night. Haredim associated with Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach's Yerushalmi Faction had flooded the streets in both Jerusalem and Bnei Brak to protest the arrest of two haredi men for draft dodging.
In the video, which was released by Channel 10, the soldier can be seen surrounded by a crowd of jeering haredi men, who spit at her and call her a 'shiksa', an insulting Yiddish term used to refer to non-Jewish women. The soldier kicks and swipes at the men in an attempt to escape the onslaught.
Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach ordered his Yerushalmi Faction to protest on Monday after two of his followers were arrested for draft dodging the in a routine traffic stop last week.
Police had ordered the men to pull over after noticing them weaving in and out of traffic near the Dead Sea. After checking their licenses, police found that the two were wanted for draft dodging, as both had refused to report to the IDF recruitment center to receive their deferments. Police arrested them immediately and handed them over to the military police.
After a judge sentenced the pair to 20 days in prison, Rabbi Auerbach told followers that "the entire Torah world is appalled by the arrest of these boys for studying Torah, and we will not rest until this draft decree is erased".
Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach Yerushalmi Faction split off from the mainstream Lithuanian haredi world after the death of Rabbi Elyashiv in 2012. The Yerushalmi Faction consider's Rabbi Elyashiv successor, Bnei Brak's Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman, to be an illegitimate leader and has been locked in a power struggle with the haredi world ever since.
One of the main points of contention between the Yerushalmi Faction and Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman is the attitude towards the IDF. While Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman is considered relatively moderate on the issue, reportedly quietly backing the formation of Nahal Haredi, Rabbi Auerbach instructs his followers not to even report to the draft office to receive a deferment.
As a result, followers of the Yerushalmi Faction are often arrested by IDF military police for draft dodging, leading to large, noisy demonstrations.
