Stephen Paddock, the gunman behind the mass shooting in Las Vegas Sunday night, shot and killed himself before being apprehended, police stated.
Paddock, 64, opened fire at a country music concert at the Mandalay Bay resort just before 10:30 p.m. local time. 50 people were murdered and more than 400 were wounded in the worst mass shooting in US history.
The shooter fired out of his room at the hotel before turning his gun on himself. Fox News reported that a SWAT team used an explosive device to enter his room, where they found found Paddock dead of a fresh gunshot wound, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Undersheriff Kevin McMahill told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Police found numerous guns and weapons in the room.
"We've located numerous firearms within the room that he occupied," Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters.
Lombardo said that the shooter's motives remain unclear. "We have no idea what his belief system was. Right now, we believe he was the sole aggressor and the scene is static."
