The Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group on Sunday claimed responsibility for a stabbing attack in Marseille, France, in which two women were murdered.
ISIS made the claim through its news agency, Amaq, and said the terrorist was one of its "soldiers", said the SITE intelligence group, which tracks the online activity of jihadist organizations.
The stabber slit the throat of one of the victims, according to AFP. The attacker is a man with a criminal record believed to be in his 30s who witnesses said shouted "Allahu Akbar" at the start of his rampage.
He was eventually shot dead by soldiers on patrol.
France has been under a heightened terror alert and has suffered numerous attacks in recent years.
Several weeks ago, two women were assaulted in Chalon-sur-Saone by a man with a hammer who shouted “Allahu Akbar".
In August, at least six French soldiers were injured after a car rammed into them in Paris's Levallois-Perret suburb.
In February, a knife-wielding terrorist attacked French soldiers at the Louvre.
Last July, a terrorist rammed into pedestrians celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, killing 84 people and injuring over 100.
