Tens of thousands of Israelis attended synagogues throughout Israel on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), which began Friday at sunset and ended Saturday evening at 7:02p.m. with the sounding of the shofar (ram's horn).
Bus service will resume at 8:30p.m. on Saturday night. Trains, excepting the train from Nahariya to Ben Gurion Airport, will begin operating on Sunday morning.
The Nahariya-Ben Gurion Airport train will leave at 11:15p.m.
During Yom Kippur, Magen David Adom (MDA) teams were on the highest level of alert. Stations were reinforced with volunteers, ambulances and medi-cycles in communities and neighborhoods. First responders prayed in synagogues around the Western Wall.
Over the course of the 25-hour fast, MDA teams responded to 2,229 calls. 238 of these were people who fainted, and 265 were children and adults who were injured while riding bicycles. 24 people were injured in violent incidents.
MDA volunteers also resuscitated 21 patients. and treated 28 victims of car accidents. Two of the accident victims were moderately injured, and the rest were lightly injured.
MDA teams treated and evacuated to hospitals 134 women in labor, and helped deliver 7 babies.
During Yom Kippur, MDA blood services supplied 62 blood units to hospitals.
In addition, there were two rock attacks against MDA ambulances in Acre and Ashdod. Both incidents were perpetrated by children and youth. It should be noted that the perpetrators were not haredim.
