Jerusalem’s Building and Planning Committee is expected to approve on Sunday the building of 176 new housing units for Jews in the neighborhood of Nof Tzion in southeast Jerusalem, Kan 11 reported this evening.

The neighborhood, close to both the Jewish Armon Hanatziv neighborhood and the hostile Arab Jabel Mukaber neighborhood, currently contains 91 apartments, mainly housing families from the religious Zionist sector. There are two kindergartens, a park, and three synagogues.

If the plan is indeed approved, Nof Tzion will become the biggest of the Jewish-populated neighborhoods in southeast Jerusalem.

Nof Tzion is built on private land bought by an Israeli developer. At one point, several years ago, sales were slow and he could not meet his financial obligations.. An Arab businessman offered to buy the land and build homes for Arabs, but Israeli supermarket chain owner Rami Levy came up with the necessary funds.
