Local elections are taking place today in the city of Lod, near Ramle and southeast of Tel Aviv. MK Maxim Levy (Gesher) is running for mayor against Eli Sahar of Herut and four other candidates. The Herut candidate has made the city\'s increasing Arab population the main issue. The city now numbers 70,000 people, 27% of whom are Arab - up from 20% only four years ago. Sahar says that many Arabs, as well as residents of the PA, build unrestrictedly and without licenses throughout the city.
If Levy wins the race, his place in the Knesset will be filled by Orit Noked of the Labor Party. A tense race is also being run for the municipal council between Shas and Am Echad, as well as 16 other lists.
