A man was shot in the center of Brussels on Friday evening after attacking two soldiers with a knife, Brussels prosecutors said, according to Reuters.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition where he later died of his wounds.

Federal prosecutors said they were treating the incident as an attempted terrorist murder.

A spokeswoman for federal prosecutors said the man had shouted “Allahu Akbar”.

The soldiers were lightly wounded in the attack, one in the face and the other in the hand.

Brussels has been hit by several terrorist attacks. In June, an Islamic State (ISIS) sympathizer set off a bomb at a Brussels Central Station.

In March 2016, terrorists affiliated with ISIS carried out a coordinated attack at Brussels Airport in Zaventem and Maalbeek metro station in the city, killing 32 people.

The attacks were carried out by the same Brussels-based cell behind the November 2015 suicide bombings and shootings in Paris which left 130 people dead.
