Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara attended on Saturday the funeral of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
The funeral took place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Also attending were German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former US President Bill Clinton, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Since the funeral took place on the Sabbath, (Saturday), the Netanyahus walked to the European Parliament instead of driving. Later, when Netanyahu was asked to speak at the ceremony, which would have entailed using a microphone, he declined due to his Sabbath observance .
Netanyahu took advantage of the opportunity to thank Merkel for approving the submarine deal.
Speaking with Macron, Netanyahu agreed to fly to France in two weeks for the pair's first working meeting.
While in France, Netanyahu will take part in a ceremony marking 750 years since France's expulsion of its Jewish population.
