Jerusalem Day - the anniversary of the liberation and reunification of Jerusalem during the Six Day War in 1967 - will be celebrated on Thursday. Usually commemorated on the 28th day of Iyar, it is being advanced by one day this year in accordance with a Chief Rabbinate regulation stipulating that it must not fall out on a Friday, in order to avoid possible Sabbath desecration.

An official ceremony will be held Thursday evening at Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem, the site of a critical Six Day War battle, with the participation of President Katzav, Prime Minister Sharon (who is scheduled to have returned from the U.S. by then), Supreme Court President Barak, Jerusalem Mayor Olmert, and many other government ministers, MKs, IDF officers, family members of the fighters, students, and others.

Other commemorations will include a march to the Western Wall, fireworks, a celebration at Yeshivat Beit Orot, a hike in the Jerusalem Forest, and more. The city of Hadera, for instance, will also commemorate the holiday with a special event, featuring singer Yehoram Gaon, tomorrow afternoon.

Haifa\'s Chief Rabbi She\'ar-Yashuv Cohen, a senior member of Israel\'s Chief Rabbinate, issued a call to rabbis and congregations around the world to \"celebrate Jerusalem Day with prayer and thanksgiving, in accordance with the rulings of the Rabbis in the Land of Israel.\"
