In a unique, first-of-its-kind event, the US and Israel are holding simultaneous broadcasts of a trans-Atlantic celebration taking place in both the Knesset and US Congress.
Lobby for US-Israel Relations Head Nachman Shai, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, Knesset members, US Embassy honorees, US senators, members of Congress, diplomats, and leaders of the American Jewish community, will celebrate Jerusalem on both sides of the ocean.
Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud) said,"This is a touching tribute, which shows the deep friendship and excellent relationship between the US and Israel."
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan addressed the event, and said that the US-Israel alliance was eternal. "Our commitment to Israel dates back to President Harry Truman, who recognized the state within minutes of her declaring independence."
He praised the reunification of Jerusalem as the eternal and undivided capital of Israel. "50 years ago this week, Jerusalem, the spiritual and religious capital of the Jewish people was made whole again."
"After thousands of years in exile, the Jewish people are finally back home.
"Home in the land of their ancestors, home in the land that so many have died trying to defend, and home in their eternal capital of Jerusalem, never to be divided again."
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu also addressed the event, and explained why Jerusalem must never be divided again."I remember what it was like when [Jerusalem] was divided."
He explained: "As I grew up in this city, there were place we couldn't walk, because there were snipers on the walls, and the shot, occasionally, Israelis."
"It was a wounded, divided city that had no future.
Netanyahu further said that "the first thing" Israel did upon reuniting Jerusalem was to "ensure that Jerusalem was a free city for all. We made sure that the holy sites of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam were available to all, unfettered, untouched."
"Look around us. Understand what would happen to this less than a square mile if we weren't here? It would descend into horrible sectarian violence.
"We've seen mosques blown up, churches blown up, synagogues blown up. But we don't see that [here.]
"There is one free city where Christans, Jews, and Muslims are free to worship, and that is the free and united city of Jerusalem, and is how it will stay!":
