Roger Moore, the actor made famous by his long-running stint as fictional British secret agent James Bond, passed away from cancer at the age of 89, his family reported Tuesday.
"With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated," Moore's children wrote on their Twitter account.
Moore was the third actor to play the role of James Bond, starring in seven movies as the eponymous spy from 1973 to 1985. He is tied for the most films as Bond by a single actor with Sean Connery, the actor who first played 007.
Moore, who was knighted, served as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF for 26 years.
He is survived by his wife, Kristina Tholstrup, and his three children
