The United Jewish Communities (UJC) leadership met with Israeli officials in Jerusalem last Thursday to determine the spending priority for more than $100 million raised by North American Jewry in an emergency relief campaign for Israel. The emergency campaign was launched on April 8th by UJC and the Jewish Federations of North America as a continental, grassroots response to the continuing economic, humanitarian and financial needs of Israeli citizens during the current wave of terror against the Jewish homeland.
Included at the meeting with UJC representatives, were representatives of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), the Prime Minister\'s Office and the Ministry of Finance. Jodi J. Schwartz, Chair of the UJC Israel Emergency Work Group said that Thursday’s meeting represents, \"A watershed moment in the Israel-Diaspora relationship.\"
In another display of solidarity with Israel, both the United States Senate and Congress passed resolutions on Thursday showing support for Israel’s war on Arab terror. The Senate vote passed by a vote of 94-2 while Congress approved the resolution by a count of 352-21. Both resolutions condemned Palestinian suicide attacks and stated that the United States remains committed to Israel’s right to self-defense.
Going one step further, four members of the US House of Representatives Peter Deutsch (D-FL), Joseph M. Hoeffel (D-PA), Jack Kingston (R-GA), and Jim Saxton (R-NJ), arrived in Israel on Friday for a four-day solidarity mission. The group is meeting with Israeli government officials as well as paying visits to victims of terror and their families.
