UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is “minded” to disband the UN fact-finding team that had been slated to investigate what happened during Israel’s anti-terror Jenin offensive. UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Kieran Prendergast told reporters yesterday that Annan acknowledges that a “balanced report on recent events in Jenin refugee camp would not be possible without the full cooperation of the government of Israel.\"

Prendergast’s remarks followed a decision by Israel’s Cabinet that it would not allow the team to carry out its mission. Israel fears that allowing the committee to investigate the Jenin battle would endanger Israeli interests almost beyond repair.

In related news, Israel’s Foreign Ministry has launched an international public relations campaign to explain why Israel is refusing to cooperate with the UN fact-finding team… After visiting the site of the Jenin battle, a team of US human rights physicians announced that their findings indicate that no massacre took place there.
