Rabbi Yitzchok Isaac Chover,Z'TL was the Chief Rabbi of Suwalk, Poland. He is considered a second generation student of the Vilna Gaon (1720-1797).
As a youngster he had close personal contact with the Vilna Gaon and was highly regarded even at an early age by the Vilna Gaon. He is my Great Grandfather. His words resonate today more than ever.
I will be publishing a translation of his commentary on the Hagadah with some of my own editorialization.
The foundation of Torah and Avodah is based on the retelling of the Exodus from Egypt. It is this event which makes clear to the Jew the existence of G-d and fortifies his Faith in G-d and his control of events (Hashgacha) and that G-d rules "In the heavens above and the earth below."
Both earthly and heavenly beings are constantly supported by Hashem such that G-d's wondrous control and supervision cannot cease for a moment. The entire creation is dependent on Him as it is written, "And you instill life into everything.
The world exists with G-d's Hashgacha so long as there is Torah and Avodah and so long as the Jews observe and study the Torah and serve G-d, the world is invigorated and enlightened.
On the other hand, if the Jewish People forsake the Torah and the Commandments, G-d will remove the sustaining force which maintains the universe and humanity with the result that all would cease to exist. (At a special Knesset Session which I helped organize 1/31/11, world renowned actor Jon Voight was right on the mark and highlights this when he said, "The Jews have given the world the Torah which includes every possible answer to your life's needs...I witnessed the victims of barbaric Palestinian attacks, and it is outrageous that the world accepts the barbarism as a means of attaining political goals such as a state.")
This idea, of course, depends on belief in G-d's control and supervision of all men including their minute deeds and actions (Hasgacha Pratit). This is the primary lesson of the exile to and the redemption from Egypt. Whereas the Israelites were slaves, demeaned, degraded, and oppressed with their horrible enslavement, G-d disrupted the laws of Nature here on earth and in the heavens by causing the downfall of earthly Kings (Pharaoh) and the guardian angel of Egypt. All of this was done to extract his chosen nation with an upraised hand in an instant as it is written, "With speed (Chipazon) you left Egypt.".
