One IDF regiment commemorated the successful conclusion of its Operation Defensive Shield battles in Ramallah in the following manner: On the regiment\'s last day in Ramallah, the commander suggested that the entire group travel to the Western Wall in Jerusalem, remnant of the Holy Temple, and participate in a joint thanksgiving prayer. He added that it would not be an obligatory \"exercise,\" but only for those who felt it appropriate. One of the more junior officers objected, saying that it was a regiment-wide activity and should therefore include everyone. The senior officer - and the other reserve soldiers - accepted the emendation, and the several dozen fighters all went to the Wall. Standing in formation, they recited aloud the HaGomel blessing and other prayers of thanks for having returned safely and having uncovered large amounts of weapons and explosives that were intended for the murder of Jews. \"Oh, yes,\" related one of the soldier participants. \"Neither of the two [above-mentioned] officers was outwardly religiously-observant.\"
