The United Nations Security Council will vote on Thursday afternoon on an anti-Israel draft resolution, diplomats told Reuters on Wednesday evening.
According to the news agency, the resolution will demand that Israel "immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem."
The resolution states that the construction of Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem has "no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-State solution and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace."
It also "stresses that the cessation of all Israeli settlement activities is essential for salvaging the two-state solution."
The draft was circulated by Egypt on Wednesday evening and the 15-member council is due to vote on it at 3:00 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Thursday, the diplomats said.
The resolution is a unilateral move by the Palestinian Authority (PA) which seeks to undermine Israel and bypass direct peace talks with the Jewish state.
The PA has in recent years several times initiated similar resolutions at the UN Security Council.
It remains unclear how the United States, which has traditionally vetoed anti-Israel resolutions at the Security Council, would vote, Reuters noted.
There have been concerns that President Barack Obama, freed of re-election concerns, will advance such resolutions or break with American protocol and refrain from vetoing them if they are voted upon before he leaves office.
The PA has been trying to pressure Obama to break with protocol, having just recently sent a delegation to Washington to meet with the President on the matter.
On the other side, a group of 88 senators recently urged Obama to continue to maintain the long-standing U.S. policy of vetoing one-sided UN resolutions on the Israeli-Palestinian Arab issue.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu urged the United States to veto the resolution.
“The US should veto the anti-Israel resolution at the UN Security Council on Thursday,” he tweeted.
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, blasted the resolution and said it “is the peak of hypocrisy. It will do nothing to promote a diplomatic process, and will only reward the Palestinian policy of incitement and terror.
“It is absurd that at a time when thousands are being massacred in Syria, the Security Council is devoting time and energy to convene and discuss condemning the only true democracy in the Middle East,” continued Danon.
“Over the past months we have waged a diplomatic effort urging the Council members to reject such a resolution. We expect our greatest ally not to allow this one-sided and anti-Israel resolution to be adopted by the Council," he concluded.
