In a repeat of the the infamous 'Dewey defeats Truman' headline from the Chicago Daily Tribune after the 1948 presidential election, Newsweek had to recall 125,000 magazines this week after prematurely shipping an issue with the cover story "Madame President" on the assumption that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency, the New York Post reported.

Many publications write two sets of articles during elections in order to be prepared for either outcome. Newsweek had also prepared two versions, one for the eventuality that Clinton would win, and another for the eventuality that her opponent, Donald Trump, would win, as he did in the end.

Topix Media, the Newsweek partner which produces Newsweek's special issues, decided last week to only ship the version reporting Clinton's victory, as that outcome seemed certain at the time, judging by the media and polls.

Newsweek is now rushing to print and ship the version that correctly reports on Trump's victory. The correct version will be available next week.

Tony Romando, the CEO of Topix Media, said “Like everybody else, we got it wrong."

The incorrect headline 'Dewey defeats Truman' also followed a campaign in which the candidate who was behind in the polls and expected to lose pulled off a stunning victory, just like Trump's victory over Clinton.
