Protestors from northern Jerusalem neighborhoods congregated this morning in front of the house of Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat in Jerusalem's Beit Hakerem neighborhood to protest the daily Muezzin calls that plague their neighborhoods.
Equipped with loudspeakers that blasted a Muezzin call and were directed at the Mayor's house, the protestors sought to give the Mayor a taste of what it's like to wake up to deafening noise every day.
Jerusalem Councilman Arye King commented on the incident: "This morning at dawn, residents of northern Jerusalem neighborhoods congregated in front of Mayor Nir Barkat's house. Equipped with loudspeakers, the protestors woke up the neighborhood and the Mayor and his family with the call of the Muezzin."
"The hope is that a personal experience of the bothersome noise, that blasts five times a day onto some 600,000 Jerusalem residents, will cause the Mayor to enforce laws against noise from Muezzin calls that deafen the ears of a majority of the city's residents."
"In Beit Hakerem, it is superfluous to say, the noise of the Muezzin calls from the mosques, all located in the eastern part of the city, is not heard."
