Three people are dead and more than 100 people are reported injured in a train crash at a train station in Hoboken, New Jersey on Thursday.

Emergency teams were rushed to the Lackawana Station in Hoboken, where passengers are reportedly trapped in the train involved in the accident.

The train terminal in Hoboken is the busiest in the US, with some 50,000 riders every day.

Eye-witnesses say the train failed to slow down as it approached the station, and smashed through barriers and into the station’s waiting area.

"We ran over and there were a lot of people kicking out windows trying to exit the train," one witness, said to WABC. "The second half of the first car was completely destroyed."

“The next think I know, we are plowing through the platform,” Bhagyesh Shah, a passenger on the train, told WNBC. “It was for a couple seconds, but it felt like an eternity. I saw a woman pinned under concrete. A lot of people were bleeding; one guy was crying.”

Dozens of ambulances converged on the scene to evacuate the injured.

A New Jersey Transit spokesperson said more than 250 passengers were on board the train at the time of the accident.

The train has been identified as the 1614 from the Pascack Valley line, which departed from Spring Valley, near Monsey in New York, at around 7:20 a.m. local time.

While the cause of the crash is not yet known, investigators say no signs of terrorism have yet been found, and at this stage, the incident appears to be an accident.
