Today is the day of the giant pro-Israel rally in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected, even though preparations began only six days ago. Bi-partisan Congressional leaders, former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Chairman Mortimer Zuckerman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations are among those who will speak at the rally. Netanyahu, Minister Natan Sharansky, Esther Levens of the National Unity Coalition, and others will speak afterwards at the National Press Club in Washington. Other rallies in support of Israel were held yesterday in many locations in the U.S., including:
Tyler, Texas (population: 83,000; Jewish community - 150-200; number of participants at rally: over 500); Houston, Texas;
Boca Raton, Fl.: 8,000 participants - two chartered planes left from there for the Washington rally;
Tampa Bay, Florida;
University of South Florida (this Wednesday);
Los Angeles - 14,000 people Jews and Christians outside the Federal Building (last Sunday);
Nashville, Tenn (this Wednesday).
Next Sunday a large demonstration is scheduled for Ottawa, Canada, demanding that the Canadian government stand by Israel.
