The IDF over the weekend made its biggest arrest since the start of Operation Defensive Shield, capturing Al-Aksa Brigade commander, Nasser Arwis. Arwis was in charge of terrorist activity directed at Jews living in the Shomron. Security sources say that Arwis was also in charge of recruiting members for Yasser Arafat’s Fatah Tanzim gang, and helping them plot their attacks. He is directly responsible for murdering at least 11 Israelis over the past 19 months.

An elite commando unit captured Arwis by complete surprise in the village of Tubas, northeast of Shechem. He was arrested along with his assistant and two other wanted Fatah fugitives. The special-forces team was able to catch Arwis as he slept. Israel radio reports that the soldiers woke up Arwis by placing a gun to his head. He and his colleagues surrendered without a fight.
