Yesterday, The European Union Parliament urged EU governments to consider imposing economic sanctions on Israel. The move is an attempt by the parliament to force Israel to withdraw from PLO controlled areas. The non-binding parliament vote passed by a count of 269 to 208, with 22 abstentions. Currently Israel enjoys free trade with EU counties, and Israeli products are easily accessed throughout European markets.
If sanctions were to be passed, Israel would no longer be granted customs-free entry into EU countries. EU sanctions would put a clamp on Israeli agricultural and high-tech products from reaching EU markets. Also, European weapons sales to Israel would be shelved.
In a related matter, US press secretary Ari Fleisher said that despite Israel’s incursions into PLO areas, the United States would not consider cutting off any foreign aid to the Jewish State.
