A stabbing attack was foiled on Sunday afternoon at the Huwara checkpoint, south of Shechem (Nablus) in Samaria.

The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the man as Rami Awartani, 31 years old, and a resident of Shechem.

Awartani arrived at the checkpoint by car, from the direction of Shechem. He stopped the vehicle there, and ran toward soldiers with a knife.

"An assailant armed with a knife exited his vehicle and charged soldiers at the entrance to Nablus," an IDF spokeswoman reported in an official statement.

"Forces thwarted the attempted stabbing attack and shot the assailant, resulting in his death."

Awartani was declared dead at the scene. No soldiers were hurt.

Israeli police issued a statement following the abortive attack.

"After the security warning in large sections of the Negev and Southern districts... we now return to normal."

Police were apparently investigating a concern that there was a connection between the attempted stabbing and another event in southern Har Hevron.
