Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday night that the suicide attack on Istanbul's main international airport was aimed at undermining Turkey through the killing of innocent people.

"It is clear that this attack is not aimed at achieving any result but only to create propaganda material against our country using simply the blood and pain of innocent people," he said in a written statement quoted by Reuters.

Erdogan also said he expected the world to show a "decisive stance" against terrorist groups in the wake of the attack.

At least 36 people were killed in the attack on the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, and more than 100 were wounded.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said earlier the attackers arrived at the airport in a taxi and blew themselves up after opening fire.

Turkish media reported that the Islamic State (ISIS) was responsible for the attack, and Yildirim indicated that all signs indeed pointed to that being the case.
