Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump responded on Tuesday to the terrorist attacks on the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, calling on the world to realize what is going on and saying that such terrorist attacks must be prevented from happening in the United States.
“Yet another terrorist attack, this time in Turkey. Will the world ever realize what is going on? So sad,” he wrote on Twitter.
“We must do everything possible to keep this horrible terrorism outside the United States,” added Trump.
Officials in Turkey say that at least 50 people were killed in the Istanbul airport attacks, which were carried out by at least two – and possibly three – suicide bombers.
While some reports said the Islamic State (ISIS) was responsible for the attacks, a Turkish official said it was too early to determine that for a fact.
Trump has caused an uproar in the United States over his calls to temporarily ban Muslim entry into the U.S. over security concerns.
He repeated that call following the recent terror shooting in an Orlando nightclub that left 49 dead and 53 wounded, saying the U.S. needs to improve its tracking of potential terrorists through profiling.
Trump has also urged President Barack Obama to name Islamic terrorism as the cause for these attacks, comments which both Obama and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton have rejected.
