The IDF over the last 24 hours continued its wide-scale operations inside of PLO controlled areas. Early this morning IDF forces entered the town of Bethlehem, south of the capital. Troops also set up posts in the nearby village of Al-Khader. Arabs from these areas in recent days have been targeting Jewish motorists on the Jerusalem-Gush Etzion tunnels highway. Soldiers remain in the town of Beit-Jalla, also in the Bethlehem district. They entered that city over the weekend after Arabs there launched a mortar shell at the Jerusalem’s Gilo neighborhood. The mortar caused no injuries but did significant damage to a building.

Last night, a large ground force backed by tanks and armored vehicles took control of the town of Kalkilya, just east of Kfar Sava. Troops began searching for wanted terrorists and weapons/ammunition storage facilities there. The IDF says that the force is committed to remaining in Kalkilya until the town’s terrorist infrastructure is destroyed. The IDF also arrested six suspected terrorists in the nearby village of Azun. Arabs have recently used Kalkilya and surrounding areas as a base for attacks on neighboring cities.

One soldier was seriously wounded and seven others sustained light injuries in the Kalkilya operation when Arabs detonated an explosive device against the force as the soldiers were inspecting a home.

Soldiers last night also took up positions near the town of Tulkarem, east of Netanya. Forces also remain in the town of Ramallah and are very close to the office of PLO leader Yasser Arafat.
