Israel will emerge victorious from the current war of terror, Prime Minister Sharon said last night in a televised speech to the nation. In the four-minute message of hope delivered from behind his office desk, Sharon spoke about how Israel had done everything in its power to try to bring about a ceasefire and to proceed with diplomatic negotiations with the Arabs. What we got in response, Sharon said, “Was terror, terror, and more terror.” Sharon also took the time to send his condolences to the victims of recent terror attacks and wished those who were injured in the numerous incidents over the past week a speedy recovery.
In the address Sharon also stated that the current IDF offensive into PLO controlled areas was to strike at the foundations of the terrorist infrastructure. Sharon placed the blame for the current war directly on PLO leader Yasser Arafat. He said that Arafat was an obstacle to the peace in the Middle East and an enemy to the entire civilized world. The Prime Minister admitted that Israel is currently at a decisive point in its short history, but he said that he is confident that Israel will overcome and peace will reign.
In reaction to Sharon’s talk Rabbi Yitzchak Levy (National Religious Party), stated that the Prime Minister’s speech, “Represents the borderline of the awakening that we were expecting.” Levy went on to say that, “Today, he [Sharon] aligned himself with the National Religious Party position of a year ago.”
MK Michael Kleiner, (Herut Party) stated that the Prime Minister seems ridiculous when he calls Yasser Arafat an enemy of the nation and of the entire free world, while at the same time seeing to it that he received pita bread over the Passover holiday. “It’s a good thing he didn’t give him matzot,” Kleiner said. He added that, “If Arafat is the enemy of the nation and of the free world, then it is unconscionable that he enjoys immunity from attack, that he receives foodstuffs, water, electricity, that he is able to be interviewed on CNN and that he receives courtesy calls from leftist groups.”
