In a closed meeting at the Knesset on Monday, Zionist Union leader Yitzhak Herzog faced insults and allegations from several members of his own party. The criticism and name calling was heaped upon the antagonism he faced earlier in the week from members of the Central committee of the Labor party, following his declaration that the "two-state solution" is untenable.

To make matters worse, the entire faction seemed to erupt from within and insults, as well as screaming and name calling, could be heard from outside the closed doors of the meeting according to an Army Radio report.

The weekly meeting was held amid high tensions only one day after leaders of the Labor party castigated Herzog for his comments at a joint faction event that was held in Holon. According to a recording that was played by Army Radio, one of the MKs of the Labor party was heard disrupting the faction meeting by saying "Members of the Labor party, you are dealing here with excrement!"

The differing opinions among Zionist Union MKs revolve around the faction's perceived leaning to the right side of the political spectrum. MK Shelly Yechimovich, who hails from the hard-left of the Labor party's side of the faction, recently came out and said that Herzog is not leaning to the right, but is rather using the actual words of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyhau.

Another point of contention between party members was comments by MK Zohir Bahalul, number 17 on the party list, who objected to the word "Zionist" in the Zionist Union party's name.

Following his comment a fight broke out between Bahalul and one of the faction activists during which Bahalul said "I joined the Labor party and not the Zionist Union party."

The Zionist Union is made up of the Labor Party, headed by Herzog, and Tzipi Livni's Hatnua party.
