Yitzhak Rabin's personal security guard has spoken out exactly 20 years after the fateful night in which the prime minister was murdered following a peace rally in Tel Aviv.

In an interview with Channel 2, the guard - identified only as A. - recounted the moments leading up to and after the assassination on the night of November 4, 1995.

"We'd already finished walking down to the sidewalk. We had advanced a bit on the sidewalk when suddenly I heard a shot. I turned my head, and I saw a man - who I later identified as Yigal Amir - standing with his right arm outstretched. And then there was another shot."

A's immediate reaction was to jump on Amir. "With my right hand, I hit him in the shooting hand and with my left hand I grabbed him and grabbed his neck," he recalled.

"I hit him with my fists, pulled out a gun and pressed the gun to his head. I thought about it but decided not to shoot."

A. said memories of the murder would haunt him throughout his life.

"On my last day (on earth) - this will be the thing I think about," he told the news station.
