Roni Alsheich, the deputy head of the Israel Security Agency (ISA or Shin Bet), will be the next Police Commissioner, the government ruled Sunday, after Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) officially submitted his candidacy.
"Roni is a senior officer with extensive experience in the war on terrorism and who is very familiar with police work," Erdan stated following the approval. "He is a professional who has promoted many reforms in the defense field, and I can assure that this professionalism, together with the values he brings with him, will allow him to move the Israel Police forward with all the challenges it faces."
Alsheich, 52, previously lived in the Binyamin region of Samaria. He has been deeply involved in the ISA's war on terror, and is considered a "mastermind" of the organization's counter-terrorism strategy. During his IDF service, he served in the Paratroopers' Brigade and commanded several units.
Alsheich has a BA and MA in Political Science from the University of Haifa and Tel Aviv, as well as an MA in Criminology from Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The ISA deputy chief has received an endorsement from Avi Naim, chairman of the local authority security council, head of the Beit Aryeh regional council in Samaria and a former ISA official.
