A group of 12 teenagers - six new immigrants and six veteran Israelis - began a videotaped bicycle tour of Israel last week, from Mt. Hermon in the northern Golan all the way to Mitzpeh Ramon in the Negev. Their goal: to learn about the world of new immigrant youth and help them integrate into Israeli society. The two-week excursion was initiated and funded by the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption, and included meetings along their route with other young immigrants in special projects. The tour was videotaped for a 15-part television series that will deal with different aspects of the encounter between Israeli society and young new immigrants. The series, similar to the TV series Survival, is based on the personal stories of the participants and the interactions between them.
The Jewish Agency reports that although 5,169 new immigrants have arrived in Israel since the beginning of 2002, for a weekly average of about 565, this past week saw the arrival of 626 new immigrants to Israel - including 395 from the former Soviet Union and 78 from Argentina.
