Rabbi Lau, who is himself a major in the IDF reserves serving in the Intelligence Corps, was visiting a hesder yeshiva that is part of the program of Torah academies combining advanced Jewish studies with army service.

The rabbi was met by Rabbi Elyakim Levanon, who is the dean of the yeshiva and the chief rabbi of the Samaria Regional Council.

Rabbi Levanon gave Rabbi Lau a warm welcome, expressing his full support for the Chief Rabbinate and its leaders.

Afterwards Rabbi Lau visited the hesder yeshiva in nearby Itamar, which is headed by former IDF Chief Rabbi Avihai Rontzki.

There too he was greeted enthusiastically by the students and staff, and then gave a lesson on the Gemara, one of the central Jewish legal texts.
