A Colorado jury sentenced James Holmes to life in prison in the July 2012 Aurora, Colorado, shooting at a movie theater that left 12 people dead, Reuters reports Saturday.

Holmes faced two counts of first-degree murder for each of the 12 victims.

The jury convicted him on all 24 counts in July, as well as for attempted murder on all of the 140 counts against him for the 70 people wounded in the shooting, and one count of possession or control of an explosive or incendiary device.

Holmes, a now 27 year-old former neuroscience student, was eligible to receive death by lethal injection for his crimes. The jury could not reach a unanimous vote on the death sentence, however, meaning that Holmes receives a life sentence no possiblity of parole by deafult.

The defendant did not react to the verdict and sat there with his hands in his pockets - the same way he reacted to his conviction last month.
