An Israeli backpacker in his 20s died Monday during a trip to Peru under unclear circumstances. His family has been notified.
The unfortunate hiker was identified as Aviv Bromberg of Kfar Saba, located northeast of Tel Aviv in the coastal area.
The Foreign Ministry's situation room is working with the local authorities regarding the transfer of his body to the capital Lima, and is in touch with his family in Israel, according to Walla! News.
The Israeli tourist, who visited with friends on a trip after the army, was killed near a lake along the dangerous Huayhuash trek in Peru's Andes mountain range.
This is one of the favorite treks for tourists from around the world and is considered among the most beautiful but also the most dangerous; several tourists have died there. Most of the trails are at least 4,000 meters (13,123 ft) above sea level; at its peak, the Yerupajá, the range reaches 6,635 m (21,768 ft) high. The high altitude can cause breathing difficulties and the weather there at present is very cold and often windy.
Local police stated that the Israeli died on the eighth and final day of the trek, after he apparently suffered breathing difficulties while hiking; he eventually began suffering from cardiac arrest.
He received first aid treatment, but collapsed and died before he could reach the campsite.
This is the second Israeli this year to die while touring in Peru. In April, 24 year-old Max Sela died after he fell from a zip linein the Machu Picchu region; the family accused the operators of negligence in the accident.
