A soldier who claimed on Sunday that he had been attacked while wearing an IDF uniform in Nazareth said Monday that he had made up the whole story. The soldier, a Christian Arab, said he had been attacked by local Arabs who were opposed to Arabs serving in the IDF.

In a statement, police said that the soldier made the admission while under questioning by the police, who said that they had suspected that something was amiss in the story.

The story had generated angry reactions in many sectors of Israeli society. The soldier will now be charged with filing a false police report, obstruction of justice, and other charges.

In a statement, the Forum for the Induction of Christians in the IDF said that it “regretted that a soldier, chose to take advantage of the real issued of violence that Christian soldiers in Israel are faced with for his own personal aggrandizement.

“Over the past year there have been a number of real such attacks, and unfortunately the one that came to the public's attention,” the forum noted.
