Slurpees

To celebrate its calendric namesake, convenience store chain 7/11 gives out free Slurpees – its signature ice and syrup drinks – to all comers. This year, though, religious Jews lost out – because July 11, the day the chain celebrates, came out on Shabbat.

Not to worry. In order to accommodate its many Orthodox customers, the chain added an extra freebie day for those who patronize 7/11's under rabbinical supervision.

According to the YeahThatsKosher web site, which keeps track of such things, “7Elevens in West Hempstead, Hewlett, Great Neck in Long Island, NY as well as in Oakhurst, NJ (Deal), and College Park, MD will be offering free small Slurpees on Sunday 7/12 in recognition of the local Jews not being able to take advantage of the promotion on the day before.”

The site also lists the flavors of Slurpee that are rabbinically endorsed, at all 7/11s. Kosher certification at 7/11s relates mostly to the coffee and other beverages sold by the chain.
