A large-scale terrorist attack was averted on the busy Emek Refaim St. in Jerusalem this afternoon when a waiter in a coffee shop noticed a suspicious Arab carrying or wearing a heavy bag. With the help of another man, he pushed him out of the shop and neutralized the wires hanging out of his jacket. The waiter, Shlomi Har\'el, later said that he spoke briefly to the terrorist in Arabic, \"but he barely answered. I asked him what was in the bag, and he said, \'clothes.\' He was all red and sweating, and barely resisted when I lifted his bag to see how heavy it was - it was definitely heavier than clothes - and even when we pushed him out and took the bag off him. He appeared to be in total shock...\" Police officials praised the two civilians for preventing a major catastrophe. They said that the bomb was particularly powerful, and took it outside city limits to detonate it.
Elsewhere, in the Shomron city of Ariel, another suicide terrorist did succeed in blowing himself up - but there too, did not have much \"luck\" in killing Israelis. The would-be mass-murderer walked into the Eshel HaShomron hotel just outside Ariel, on the Tapuach-Rosh Ha\'Ayin highway, and detonated the bomb. The blast was very powerful and extended even into the neighboring supermarket; one person was seriously wounded, and several others suffered lighter wounds.
Arabs shot at the Gilo neighborhood of southern Jerusalem this morning, as well as at cars on the Tunnels Highway; no one was hurt. Devorah Friedman, 46, mother of four, was murdered on that route by terrorist gunfire two days ago.
