An Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander was killed in the battle with Islamic State (ISIS) over Ramadi, Iraq, according to a report published Monday.

Jassem Nouri was named as the guard killed on May 28, as he fended off ISIS; ISIS officially defeated Iraqi soldiers to capture Ramadi on May 17, but a strong resistance has remained.

Nouri was fighting with Hezbollah, following a directive both from the terror group and from Tehran to drive ISIS out of Anbar province, according to the Long War Journal

Nouri was from the Iran-Iraq border province of Khuzestan; Iranian press describe him as the "defender of the shrines," or in charge of protecting Shi'ite holy sites in Iraq such as the Karbala.

This is not the first time an IRCG commander has been killed in Iraq. In March, the US announced that it had killed two commanders in an international coalition airstrike on Tikrit, as part of its wider-ranging operation in the area, Operation Inherent Resolve.

Meanwhile, General Qassem Suleimani, the once rarely seen commander of the powerful Qods Force, has become the public face of Iran's support for the Iraqi and Syrian governments against Sunni rebellions in their countries.

He has frequently been pictured on social media in Iraq with pro-government forces, including Kurdish fighters and Shia Islamist militia units in battle areas.
