Opposition leader and Zionist Union chairman Yitzhak Herzog has launched another attack on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu - this time over the impromptu dismissal of Communications Ministry Director Avi Berger.

Netanyahu, who is currently the Acting Communications Minister, fired Berger over the phone on Sunday night.

Writing on his Facebook page Monday morning, Herzog accused the Prime Minister of taking a page out of the playbook of repressive regimes in the region.

"Is Bibi learning from neighboring countries? An all-out war against the media. Did he fire the Communications Ministry Director over the telephone, so that everyone will know the new boss has arrived? He should not be able to," Herzog asserted.

"At a Zionist Union meeting," Herzog added, "we will examine what can be done, both legally and publicly, and how we can fight this. But this is also your struggle. The public's right to freedom of the press. We will not abandon you."

Netanyahu's swift move is likely related to tension between him and the man who appointed Berger, the outgoing Minister of Communications, Gilad Erdan.

Under Erdan, Berger led a series of reforms in the cellular communications market, including the broadband reform, tenders for fourth generation cellular and unification of cellular networks.
