Jerusalem District Court on Monday morning indicted the Arab terrorist who intentionally ran over Shalom Yohai Sherki and Shira Klein over a week ago, killing Sherki and leaving his companion in serious condition.
The indictment was accompanied by emotional scenes as angry relatives of the victim shouted at his killer: "Murderer! Murderer! Burn in hellfire you dead man!"
Nitza Kahana, Shalom Sherki's aunt, also had harsh words for outgoing Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich (Yisrael Beytenu), who declared recently that it is not possible to stop such "lone wolf" terror attacks.
"The government's job is to protect its citizens, and his comments were outrageous," she said.
"There are ways to deal with dangerous terrorists other than the death penalty," Kahana added, referring to successive governments' reluctance to apply the death penalty to terrorist murderers. "In every area where a dangerous terrorist comes from we should build a Jewish neighborhood in the name of the victims."
Last week, the court approved for publication the details of the suspect and his interrogation.
37-year-old Khaled Kutina, a resident of Jerusalem's Anata neighborhood, admitted under questioning to purposely running over the Jewish couple on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
According to the indictment, Kutina, a devoutly religious Muslim who worked as a cleaner at a mosque in Anata, went out in his car at 22:30 on Wednesday April 15, and drove along Highway 1 toward Jerusalem's Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood looking for victims.
After stopping at a red light just outside the Police Headquarters, he waited for the signal to change. As soon as it did, he swerved his vehicle into a bus stop outside the intersection, hitting the young Jewish couple who were waiting there after a date.
The terrorist attempted to flee but reversed his car into a pole. Police arrived soon after and arrested him.
Police were initially hesitant to label the attack an act of terror, until the Arab driver in question admitted under questioning that he had acted deliberately, after going out looking to kill Jews.
Shalom Yohai Sherki was finally officially recognized as the victim of a terrorist attack on Monday, only a day before Memorial Day - making him Israel's most recent victim of terror.
Speaking to Arutz Sheva last week, teachers, students and colleagues told of their shock and sadness over losing "such a special person."
"Shalom was an amazing guy, full of the joys of life, with a huge smile constantly on his face.
"Shalom was filled with a love for mankind, a giving and happy person (who) always raised the mood around him, sometimes just by his mere presence."
