Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will convene his security cabinet tomorrow to decide whether or not to lift the travel ban on PLO leader Yasser Arafat. Israel has kept Arafat under house arrest in his Ramallah compound since December, when Arabs murdered Tourism Minister Rechavam Ze’evi. The debate on whether or not to allow Arafat to leave Ramallah surfaced this week after the PLO claimed to have arrested the terrorists involved in the assassination of Ze’evi. Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, and Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer have voiced their support for Arafat’s release while ministers Avigdor Liberman (Yisrael Beiteinu Party) and Natan Sharansky (Yisrael Be’aliyah Party) are opposed to the move. Liberman in fact has said that his party would leave Sharon’s coalition government if Arafat is released from Ramallah.
