Six soldiers were murdered last night in what is considered a lethally well-planned attack on an isolated outpost northwest of Ramallah. Eight soldiers had just come on duty at the Ein Arik Checkpoint near Talmon when 3-5 Arabs began their fatal attack.
They first shot from close range at the three soldiers manning the post, who were killed immediately. They then shot at the lone soldier near the building that housed the troops, causing him serious injuries that were later downgraded to moderate. The Arabs next entered the building, killed all three of the soldiers there. The eighth soldier, positioned on the roof of the building, returned fire.
Investigators found that all the soldiers were hit by terrorist gunfire from close range, and the six who were killed were hit in their heads. The Arabs took the weapons of two soldiers, but left behind one of their own AK-47 rifles. Fatah, which is under the direct responsibility of Yasser Arafat, claimed credit for the attack, as well as for a string of failed and successful suicide bombing and shooting attacks since last week. Seventeen Israelis have been murdered in less than six days, a total of 24 this month.
