Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, the gunman responsible for the terrorist attack in Ottawa last week was "driven by ideological and political motives" and made a video of himself, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) informed Sunday.

Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, opened fire at Canada's National War Memorial and Parliament Hill on Wednesday, killing army reservist Cpl. Nathan Cirillo. Zehaf-Bibeau was then shot and killed by security.

Multiple US sources reported last week that Zehaf-Bibeau had ties to jihadists in Canada who shared his radical Islamist ideology. These include at least one acquaintance who went to fight for Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

US officials also stated that the suspect was a convert to Islam who changed his name from Michael Joseph Hall.

Although not known at any local mosques, a witness from the homeless shelter where Zehaf-Bibeau was staying prior to the attack, told reporters that he was praying and chanting the night before.

The shooter's video was recorded just prior to the attack, RCMP revealed in a statement. Authorities are still conducting an analysis of the video and will not be releasing it to the public at this time.

However, police did offer several other updates on their investigation.

They confirmed that Zehaf-Bibeau used a gun that was old and uncommon. He carried a knife, which authorities believe to have been taken from his aunt's property. In the past, Zehaf-Bibeau worked in the oil fields in Alberta to save money.

Officials are also still looking into the possibility that another assailant or accessory may have been involved in the attack.

According to RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson, Zehaf-Bibeau was a Canadian citizen who might also have had Libyan citizenship. The gunman had a prior criminal record with charges relating to drugs and violence.

Zehaf-Bibeau was applying for a passport - an application that was under investigation - at the time of the attack, Paulson said.

"I think the passport figured prominently in his motives," said the police commissioner. "However, we have not come to ground completely on his motivations for this attack. But clearly, it's linked to his radicalization. Clearly, it's linked to his difficult circumstances."
